Germany UEFA U-17 Champions

May 18th, 2009 | By: Nick | 1 Comment »

The German U-17 defeated the Netherlands in extra time to capture both the UEFA U-17 European Championship title and the Fair Play Award. The tournament in Germany was the highest attended youth competition in recent memory and was capped by memorable performances from a dominant home side. Possible players of the tournament include Bienvenue Basala-Mazana, Christopher Buchtmann, and Mario Götze. Congratulations to the boys and to the coach Marco Pezzaiuoli. Maybe Löw can bring one of them along to the World Cup? Sammer is right we need to get use to winning like this. Next stop UEFA U-21 EM and the 2010 FIFA World Cup!

And here’s the winning goal by Werder Bremen’s Florian Trinks:

What a strike to settle a final. I recorded the match and skipped through it a bit. I don’t really watch a lot of youth football, so it’s difficult to judge, but this German team had a really impressive dominant midfield that can pass the ball around very quickly and play at an overall remarkably high speed.

As a fan of the Bundesliga, I hope that clubs find ways to fend of poaching attempts. Borussia Dortmund’s Christopher Buchtmann has already been poached by Liverpool and Mustafi will leave Hamburg for Everton…
