U21: Germany 4-1 Cyprus
Germany’s U21 team had been the subject of a bit of a power struggle between Matthias Sammer and Jogi Löw, with Löw eventually installing his preferred coach Rainer Adrion. The following qualification campaign was a complete mess though, with Germany missing out on this year’s Euros and next year’s Olympics.
Time for Adrion to finally backup his good reputation he earned as Stuttgart U23 coach, with a fresh Euro campaign, that kicked off against Cyprus in Karlsruhe. The Bundesliga current love affair with youth meant that 16 of the 19 players Adrion called up are already more or less established players at their clubs.
Cyprus certainly isn’t a benchmark, but especially in the first half, Germany played with a lot of ambition, while stringing together some fine passing moves. Schalke’s Lewis Holtby and Julian Draxler with a good performance in particular. One goal and one assist also isn’t such a bad debut for a 17 year old.
I’ll ignore the comedy quasi own-goal for the moment, hoping that such a lapse of concentration won’t happen in closer matches against stronger opposition.

It’s perfect for high scoring friendlies and against smaller teams though. The last three games of the national team ... [read more]
