Marin, Helmes and Jones get the Axe
The news are out and Marko Marin, Patrick Helmes and Jermaine Jones were sent back home.
So much for all the Marin superstar hype, his promising performance in yesterdays friendly and the praise Löw had for his little one. Helmes, Jones and Marin were the players with the least experience in the national team, and this could be one of the main reasons for their dismissal. There would be little to argue about it, if it wasn’t for some of the players Löw chose to keep. There is an overall mediocre player who has not much more than his speedy feet, who once again will appear in a major tournament. Just to name one.
Marin, Helmes and Jones will still be the first to be called up, should someone on their position get injured.
Jogi Löw was also quick to offer them a perspective in the national team for the coming years. Oliver Neuville will turn 35 this year, so I pretty much expect the Euros to be his swan-song and then Helmes would fill his shoes in the World Cup qualifiers.
Update: A little fun with names gem spotted by Diana, and as it fits this post: Löw moment for Germany trio. How Löw can you go, UEFA?

No need to do so. Marin had given back his Bosnian passport in January, at which point it was clear that, if ever, he would play for Germany. So that can’t be the reason.

Ah.
I think I know who you are referring to.
‘How Löw can you go, UEFA?’
I actually repeated that in my head a few times. And almost burst out laughing. If this continues throughout the tournament, I won’t be surprised.
The England friendly last year in August. The last time I remembered the surname was being played around with and which went into overdrive. I was almost rolling my eyes when I read what one of our newspapers has in its headline. Forgot the title now though. I know the article was from the Guardian (it stated at the end of it) but the headline is different from its original source.

I’d wondered if that was the reason for Marin’s call, too. Too bad — I would’ve been excited to cheer him on next month. But after another couple of years of seasoning, hopefully Marin will be shining for Germany in WC10.

If anyone’s interested who’s wearing what number during the tournament, UEFA has the details up on its Euro 2008 page already. The national teams go by alphabetical order, and so some scrolling down is needed.

And regarding Marin’s exclusion, at first I was like ‘No…’. But then, maybe it’s a little too early for him to be on the senior team. Until the 2010 World Cup, then. I hope so.

Marin’s club Gladbach will probably be happy about the news. First of all they’ll have fewer big clubs trying to sign him, because that will happen soon enough anyway. And then they’ll have a rested Marin to go into a tough Bundesliga season, in which they’ll probably have to fight against relegation.

I would excuse low about Marin.. but not about exclude Helmes and leave Oliver Neuville there.
Let me ask u something guys.. what have Oliver Neuville done for the National team ? .. in my openion NONE.. he should have let Helmes play.. much better than Oliver Neuville, he is old and he is not that special player.. im a little sad.. i wanted to see Marin and Helmes playing.

Oliver Neuville scored the goal that got Germany back into the game today, scored the last gasp winner against Paraguay in the 2002 World-Cup Second Round, scored the winner against Poland in the 2006 World Cup group phase. Now what has Helmes done? Though they should have probably kept Helmes or Marin instead of Kuryani, who today again demonstrated he is the new Carsten Jancker.

Nick, thanks for the report. I was streaming the match and the screen frozen out on me minutes after the Neuville equaliser. And when I stream the match again, it’s almost close to the end of the match.
