Germany vs Spain: The Story so far…

June 29th, 2008 | By: Jan | 1 Comment »

Germany and Spain haven’t met in a major tournament for 20 years and only on three occasions overall. Here’s a quick rundown of the games:

Euro 1976 Quarter-Final (Yugoslavia)
Back in the days the Euros were played in a similar fashion clubs play out the Champions League and UEFA Cup. A group stage where each team played each other twice and a two-legged quarter final. Only the semis and the final where played in the host country (Yugoslavia). First Germany travelled to Spain, where they drew 1-1 and then made sure of advancing to the next round with a 2-0 victory in Munich.

Spain – Germany 1-1 (Madrid)
1:0 Santillana (21.)
1:1 Beer (60.)
Germany – Spain 2-0 (Munich)
1:0 U. Hoeneß (17.)
2:0 Toppmöller (43.)

Euro 1984 Group Stage (France)
Eight years later the Euros had eventually adapted a more familiar format and Spain and Germany were drawn to the same group. A 90th minute 1-0 victory by Spain in the final group game sent Germany packing and ended Jupp Derwall’s career as national team coach to make room for the Kaiser.

Germany – Spain 0:1 (Paris)
0:1 Maceda (90.)

Euro 1988 Group Stage (Germany)
Four years later the two countries were drawn together once again. This time Franz Beckenbauer’s side were the ones sending the Spaniards packing.

Germany – Spain 2:0 (Munich)
1:0 Völler (30.)
2:0 Völler (50.)

If you felt that this was all a bit too much chronicling and too little football, here is the whole story with moving images.
