Euro Aftermath: Critical Players, Uncritical Fans

July 2nd, 2008 | By: Jan | 4 Comments »

Following the Euro final defeat against Spain, around 100.000 fans at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin tried their best to cheer up the national team. This will probably have helped soothe the pain a bit for the players and the fans got some free merchandise.
We won’t have to worry though, that this reception could cloud [...]

The tabloids usually have their eyes and ears everywhere and when they don’t they pretend and invent. Yet, BILD currently scream on their front page “Jaaaaaaaa! Michael Ballack spielt!” which translates to “Jaaaaaaaa! Michael Ballack is playing!”. So, here’s a short bit of good news, or is it?
Afterall we will field a half fit Torsten [...]

Ascona Diary: Just kickin’ it with Philipp Lahm

June 25th, 2008 | By: Jan | 4 Comments »

Following their quarter final victory over Portugal, the German national team had plenty of time on their hands, with almost a full week to prepare themselves for the semi-final clash against Turkey. Two days alone were wasted for a mini-holiday, with the DFB offering a variety of possible leisure time activities. Philipp Lahm reclaimed his [...]

Bring It Home (A Germany Euro 2008 Song)

June 22nd, 2008 | By: Nick | 22 Comments »

The 2008 European Championships co-hosted by Switzerland/Austria has a special meaning for Germany. It was after all the Swiss who Germany first played in 1908. It was the Swiss FA who championed Germany’s re-entry into FIFA after the war, and it was arguably the 1954 World Cup (in Switzerland) where the young Federal Republic was [...]

The truth about Bastian Schweinsteiger

June 21st, 2008 | By: angela | 9 Comments »

All through the Euro’s, “Schweini” hasn’t exactly played class football. In fact, you could argue that he hasn’t played well in some time. Yet, when Germany took to the pitch against Portugal, he seemed to play with style and flair. That passion that had long been missing from his game.
I’m sure you [...]

Ascona Diary: Jogi’s got a Temper

June 19th, 2008 | By: Jan | 14 Comments »

At least UEFA thinks so and decided to ban Joachim Löw and his Austrian colleague Joseph Hickersberger for one match, following their comedy moment in Monday’s match. One match bans can’t be appealed and neither were either of the two coaches questioned about the incident. Instead UEFA trusted the referee’s account. Manuel Mejuto, the ref [...]

Translate this: Jogi’s Sign Language

June 14th, 2008 | By: Jan | 9 Comments »

Jogi Löw obviously had to explain himself to the press after the Croatia game. Apart from promising a different German side against Austria, and stating the obvious - “All the things we did well against Poland were conspicuous by their absence against Croatia.” - he also provided a more in depth analysis with the above [...]

Ascona Diary: Bungee Jumping Journalists

June 12th, 2008 | By: Jan | 2 Comments »

Here’s a short and quick pre-match round up of training camp related news.
As you can see from the photo, the players are having fun - lots of fun - during training. Though, given that those photos come from the few sessions, where the team opens up to the press, it could just as well all [...]

Ascona Diary: The Lago Embargo

June 6th, 2008 | By: Jan | 6 Comments »

The German national team had promised to go into hiding in their base-camp and they kept their word. As mentioned in the other post, they built a large fence around their hotel at the Lago Maggiore, and it’s doing its job so far. Only little snippets of news are bubbling to the surface, and for [...]
