World Cup awards are perplexing

July 10th, 2006 | By: Harvey Morrell | 47 Comments »

Hmm. Let’s see, Zidane headbuts an opposing player which earns him an ejection and probably costs his team the game. Despite this, he earns the Golden Ball as the best player of the tournament? From everything I read, voting for the award was to occur after the final, which means the voters knew about the red card when they voted. A much better choice, in my opinion, would have been to give the award to Fabio Cannavaro.

I don’t give a sheet (pun intended) who won this WC… now that Italy won. Congrats.

What I’m more interested now is

- whether Klinsmann will extend his contract

- what Materazzi said to Zidane slightly before that headbutt. The whole scenario, from Materazzi grabbing Zidane….. then Zidane walked off a few steps… and then turned back and ran straight into Materazzi’s chest. The paper said that Materazzi pinched Zidane’s nipples. Anyone aware of it?

Concerning the golden award nomination besides the behavior of zidane, i don’t think that cannavaro deserved it more than zidane.
During the final he began to put a volontary shoulder in the chest of Henry (who stayed minutes completly off). Then he went onto zidane and almost distroy his shoulder. On both action there was no fault give by the referee!
The italian from the first second came to kill peoples.. and the referee let them do it .
The penalty against italy was not really clear but it came after 2 or 3 italian heavy fault and the referee then give the penalty. A second one on malouda which was clear has not been declare in the second period
I think that for this game an european referee having a knowledge of both team would have been better.
Just as a remark, zero fault has been noticed on zidane by the referee with gatusso and meterassi on his back. I think this participated to his mad reaction. However, Gatusso was one of the most correct player from the italian team on that final.

What history will retain is that italy is champion and may be some time we will talk about zidane red card that’s it.

What i would like that history retains is the very high level of mistakes from referees in the first part of the worldcup and the one from the final which was far to be excellent. As in was the case in corea 2002 (where italy was kick of by the referee who refused 3 goals for italy against corea).

Well, we now KNOW that Zidane was officially the best player in the tournament, which imo is exactly how it is supposed to be, coz Zidane was the best player there. I am glad that FIFA officials are about to investigate the case and to find out what really happened between the two players, coz, if it’s really true what the press published, then shame on Materazzi and shame on each player who supported him and covered him for what he said.

Zidane the best player in the world? Puuhleeze. Not anymore. He and Real Madrid have been lousy for two years–that’s why he’s retiring. He found the old spark in the WC, true, because he was playing for country and with veteran players whose game he knows well. France has a lineup of stars. But Zidane was not nearly the best player in the tourney–Cannavaro should have won it.

Cannavaro was the best player of WC. Golden Ball is not an award to the memory or past glory. It should take in account what a player did in all games of WC and not just considering a couple of them. Anyhow, it is good for Italy to be WORLD CHAMPION and leave ZZ with this golden ball

what shame and impetus. how on earth does FIFA expect the world to believe the voting was largely done prior to the final match. when has sentiment become the basis for chosing the best?
even if zidane has been the most oustanding before the final, nothing materazzi did could justify his actions…nothing! and FIFA if they want to start been sincere about pointing the youth in the right direction should wake up.

It’s obvious that Zidane is one of the best players in the world right now, but someone made a good point in saying that he didn’t play well in the earlier games and didn’t play one because he was ejected. If the award was for best player after the group stage then he deserved it, but otherwise I don’t think he did. I didn’t watch Cannavaro other than the final so I dunno if he deserves it, but Italy let in only 2 goals in the whole Cup, one of which was a penalty and the other an own goal… that’s impressive.

Another thing, I respect C. Ronaldo’s skills, but he does play like a sissy girl. If he gets an award taken away for attitude or character, why wouldn’t Zidane get a more prestigious award taken away for something far worse? Also, some people are saying that Cannavaro and Italy in general play just as dirty, but the fact is that was Zidane did was away from play and he deserves the criticism. Hell, I might have done the same thing if I were him and Materazzi shoulnd’t have been talking sh*t, but there is no way that you can say Materazzi is as much at fault for whatever he said. Lastly, I am happy that the Italians won because they are an amazing team, but the comments that the two Italians above made are ignorant and just stupid… I assure anyone who hasn’t been there that they don’t represent the whole country.

I disagree Deep azzuro comments, indeed the problem is to find the bast player for the world cup.

The thing is that you can t give this kind of prize for defenders who only blocks the striker and kick the ball far away.

but to give the prize to someone who is gifted to play with the ball and do what he wants with it.. moreover to a player who can create a team spirit within the team and bear it…

I might be byast being Italian, but I think you are all forgetting that Zidane got THREE yellow cards before the final. He missed the last group game through suspension and therefore he was not the one who pushed France through, in fact in the 1st 2 games, when he was playing, they only managed 2 draws. He had 2 good games against Spain and Brazil (he was fantastic in the latter). Against Portugal and Italia he was good, but not outstanding. Is this enough to be the best player in the World Cup???? Cannavaro, even though he’s a defender got only one card, if I’m not mistaken, and played perfect games throughout the turnament. Ok he didn’t score, but for a defender there are more important things. Only to goals conceided, one an own goal, the other a penalty (which Zidane got as close as he could to miss because he wanted to copy Totti). Cannavaro wins hands down in my view, and I think there are other players who did better than Zidane, such as Klose

By the way what Materazzi did and said is something that happens at every minute of every game we all watch. It might be a bad and sad thing, but it’s a fact

Pruritus… I love Zidane and firmly believe he deserved the golden ball. I also think all of the Argentinians should have gotten little golden balls for their rioting after the game. And Mama Zidane should get the balls she is asking for on a platter. That would be fair too.

Arthur, I almost agree… Zidane should have said to Matrazzi “Yo, your Momma can’t cook”. M’s mother died when M was 15, so that would have been even less appropriate….

I thought from start to finsih canavarro played great and deserved the golden ball.

One great game by zidane v brasil doesn’t make a golden ball winner.

As far as coaches go i think both klinsmann and lippi deserve a great deal of praise.

Frankly, I believe the best teams of the tourtament were italy, germany, and argentina. They were all on the same side of the draw. That’s why only one of them went to the finals. On the otherside of the draw, you had france, brazil, england, and spain. I found the first three really lousy. Brazil looked very hesitant against ghana, relying on goals that should have been marked offside, which completely changed the course of the game, considering ghana dominated play prior. Ghana has asserted that favoritism was brought to brazil, perhaps the same favoritism that caused brazil to beat turkey four years ago, where refs gave brazil bogus penalties. England can’t score goals even on inferior teams. They relied on that beckham kick to win the game. Spain looked very amateur, owing to the age of the team. And it seemed that france relied on penalty kicks to get to the finals. I’m sorry but the penalty on portugal and the penalty on italy were not penalties. French players love diving inside the box apparently. Watch the two dives for yourself. Video replay doesn’t lie. The best teams were definitely italy, argentina, and germany. Unfortunately they all were on the same side of the draw. Otherwise two of those three would have ended up meeting in the finals.

Everyone knows that France thanks to Zidane has been the best team in the world of the 10 past year…dig in history ..last italian victory over France in 1978 and Brazilian ? 1992.

@Phil

I could have sworn Italy just beat France to win their fourth world cup.

I agree with you that it has been very difficult to beat France in the past. It was impossible in 1990 and 1994 since they didn’t even qualify for the world cup.

italy can only win when they have a fascist dictator corrupting the tournament or they have a corruption scandal back home (Paolo Rossi was in the middle of a 2-year match-fixing ban when he was asked to play in the 1982 world cup) – so the next time there’s a scandal going on in italy (not too difficult to predict, it’s pretty common), they’ll win. Otherwise, they can’t find the balls to achieve anything.
