Who will win the Golden Ball?

July 6th, 2006 | By: Harvey Morrell | 14 Comments »

Golden Ball winner on delay. From the story, looks like Shakira will be performing during the closing festivities. Thanks to the video that Worldcupblog team member Peter linked in his, Why Nobody Likes Cristiano Ronaldo post, Ronaldo is who I think of when I hear her song, Hips Don’t Lie. Thanks, Peter.

if italy dont let any goal in the final then Buffon has to win it with out a doubt (i mean he let one goal in, but it was a stupid own goal) .. also canavaro has been excellent and has performed at 100%

Well, it is always difficult to choose an individual player as the best player of the tournament. I supose it will be Zidane. Better is to choose a FIFA World Cup Team. With only the final and 3/4th place coming up, I will bring the next players on:

1 Buffon – Italy
2 Miguel – Portugal
3 Cannavaro – Italy
4 Terry – England
5 Lahm – Germany
6 Ballack – Germany
7 Ribery – France
8 Riquelme – Argentina
9 Zidane – France
10 Klose – Germany
11 David Villa – Spain

Bench:
12 Ricardo – Portugal
13 Grosso – Italy
14 Gallas – France
15 Maxi Rodriguez – Argentina
16 Kaka – Brazil
17 Ronaldo – Brazil
18 Van Persie – Netherlands

As a goalkeeper Buffon made a superb impression this tournament. As second goalkeeper it was a close call between Ricardo and Lehmann. Ricardo was again decisive in a penalty shoot-out and therefore be selected in the squad. Van der Sar, Hislop and Shovkovsky also deserve to be mentioned.

In the defence I like the attacking capabilites of the wingers Miguel and Lahm. Especially Lahm is playing a very good tournament. In the center a combination of Cannavaro and Terry cannot be beaten at all in my opinion. Grosso was very important for the Italians by scoring an important goal against Germany and by getting the penalty against Australia. Gallas is making a very good impression in the center instead of being often a winger at Chelsea. Good defenders that not have been selected only by a shortstrip ? Trabelsi, Sorin, Marquez and Zambrotta.

At the midfield I choose for a block of two defending midfielders. Due to enormous competition of attacking midfielders I also posted Ballack here, together with Ribery who is almost as good as his “patron” Zidane, who is selected as attacking midfielder together with the genious Riquelme. On the bench I have selected Maxi Rodriguez who played the game of his life against Serbia & Montenegro and made a wondefull goal against Mexico. Also Kaka is selected and was one of the few Brazilians who played a good tournament. Due to enormous competition in the midfield unfortunately it was not possible to select; Frings, Fabregas, Maniche, Joe Cole, Essien and Rosicky.

Two impressive forwards are selected in the squad. Klose is again very succesfull on the world stage and will deserve it to become top goalscorer. David Villa proved his status in Spain and was also a killer in front of the goal. On the bench we have Ronaldo. Unless his weight he was again one of the most dangerous strikers at the tournament. Van Persie is selected for his enormous skills and tricks which he uses very effectively. He was definitely the best Dutch player at the tournament. Not selected but good enough to be mentioned here;
Podolski, Figo, Milevskyi, Robben, Drogba, Koller, Tenorio

I agree with you Marco,

Pirlo will be brought into the squad. Ballack will become a substitute and Kaka will be left out. and OK Zambrotta in for Terry. Do you mind if we still hang on Lahm ? In my opinion he was definitely the best left winger of the tournament. New team:

1 Buffon – Italy
2 Miguel – Portugal
3 Cannavaro – Italy
4 Zambrotta – Italy
5 Lahm – Germany
6 Pirlo – Italy
7 Ribery – France
8 Riquelme – Argentina
9 Zidane – France
10 Klose – Germany
11 David Villa – Spain

12 Ricardo – Portugal
13 Terry – England
14 Grosso – Italy
15 Maxi Rodriguez – Argentina
16 Ballack – Germany
17 Ronaldo – Brazil
18 Van Persie – Netherlands

Well, if it goes to the finest player in the tournie, it has to be Zizou, who played superbly at times. If there were a boot for the most exciting, it might go to his teammate, Ribery, who was a breath of fresh air. I could watch his battle with Roberto Carlos over and over.
