Oliver Hinz vs. Nick Webster: Germany or Italy?

July 4th, 2006 | By: Harvey Morrell | 6 Comments »

Who will win the semifinal? Germany or Italy? One team will advance to the final, the other will play for third place, not necessarily a good thing. At least one participant in every third place game since 1986 has failed to qualify for the subsequent World Cup.

i say let’s hope that professional footballers will win, and not boxers on the field or bad officials.

@ John:

Oh god John, pull your finger out will you!!

Again!!! Italy and Germany were allies during WWII

BOTH countries engaged in the holocaust (SIXTY YEARS AGO)…. Are you sixty John??? Because I’m 17…(and not German)…my point is people are not responsible for acts committed 60 odd years before their birth…. regardless of how horrid and unfortunate the acts were.

Also the “Newspaper Bashing” was reciprocated by the Italian press…and its just good spirited fun and jest….what evidence was there of Racism from either side??? Do not confuse nationalism with racism (Remember Germany is composed of many people of many races who all have united behind this wave of nationalism)?? You know you can’t just go accusing people of racism (uncool) lighten up.

USA??? Your accusing Germany of racism pointing decades into the past at WWII…what about America’s racism??? Look a little more recently at your foreign policy and push for sweeping changes to your immigration policy…..your to trying to tell me the US is innocent of racism? Remember it was Germany that pushed for NATO intervention in Serbia to prevent ethnic cleansing and the US and Britain hesitation that allowed it to occur…the same again with Rwanda and Sudan (both of which occurred whilst the US as war mongering in the middle east during the Gulf War and Iraq respectively) After having declared “Never again”…. But hey none’s perfect right. I’m French and we have serious problems with regard to racism in our country….as does everyone else.

My point is Germany is not a particularly racist country (especially when you consider some of the other nations here at the finals)..and the criticisms levelled at Germany with regard to the Holocaust also apply to Italy (again they were allies Mousseline was a Fascist and idolised Hitler….. BUT perhaps if you really find this so abhorred (such that you would condemn their decedents 60 years later)…Perhaps you should switch your support to Portugal or France because Italy is as culpable as Germany (as is Austria)….but of course Portugal and France raped Africa through colonialism if you want to hold that against them too.

But most importantly if you’re going to throw around accusations of racism, try to use more contemporary data and stop pointing at the past.

Oh and yes the far better team won….see you in the final Italy.

Allez la France!!
