Liveblog: Germany vs. Sweden - FIFA World Cup 2006 - World Cup 2006 Blog

June 24th, 2006 | By: Harvey Morrell | 57 Comments »

Chris is liveblogging today’s Germany-Sweden game. Keep up to date HERE. Feel free to leave comments

Update: Germany leads 2:0 at the half on two nice strikes by Podolski. I thought the ref was a little harsh on Lucic - unless he said something, there’s no way the second yellow card was deserved.

I understand Germany has a strong mf and f.
Though your defence is HYPER slow.
So..How are you going to stop Messi, Tevez, Crespo, and Riquelme - well this last one sometime is as slow as your def. -

Great blog this, all in all, so much more at ease than quite a few others that I have been looking into.

As for GER vs ARG - anything can happen. After Argentina’s first match I thought they were the top favourites. Now I’d say: they are o n e of the top favourites. But meanwhile: so are Germany. Let’s hope for a r e g u l a r match:

- good refereeing
- fair play (well, ‘fairly’
fair at least)
- no injuries detrimental to
either side.

And hopefully it will be a good match, too (nothing like that pitiful ENG vs ECU, for instance). Does not always come natural if stakes are that high.

Being German, my heart goes out to our team, of course. They are a TURNIERMANNSCHAFT (woeful exceptions conceded). What makes me even more optimistic:
Wizard Klinsmann has injected some artistic genius into them.
(Argentina’s ex-coach Menotti admiringly spoke of a ‘revolution’.)

And then of course there is the “twelfth man” (oh no no no … not the referee). I mean
our fantastic fans. Oh well, I know Portugal had that, too, two years ago, and it didn’t help.

Like I said: anything can happen.

Just a little P.S.

I have reread some of the entries here. 2 of them struck me.
One is from Abz, the other one is from MrD.

One is dumb, the other one isn’t.

One is sour-grapes-like, the other one isn’t.

One is lacking sportsmanship, the other one is gracefully fair.

Now I am not going to tell which is which. Everybody find out for him-/herself.

To izzy Dillon:

I am not quite sure whether I understand everything you wrote correctly.
Just in case: I did not want to hurt any Argentina feelings, thats for sure. Great respect for them.
Hope there will be a deserved victory - for whom ever.

Continue to enjoy the tournament!

Saludos amigo!

TO ROLF HABICH

You are German so basically YOU want German to go through…so YOU know which one is an ignoran and which one is right…just cos when u read then u still wearing your german jersey.
MY POINT. I am an Argie who does not dislike German…only Brits and Brazilians a bit of jelousy a bit of Falklands…and even though I do want my team to beat you still capable to see that if we play as we did against Mex is going to be vry hard for me and for my team to keep any hope but if u play as u did the first 3 matches and we play just as argies can do then…who knows amigo.
So What Do you think about your own clever - est - blog.
Saludos from Pampas.

Paulita,
I believe Germans do not feel superior, but they do have the home-advantage. With all that support, it will be very difficult for Argentina to take them. They will have to fight and fight hard. It will be an intense game. Los Deutschland! Wir sind stolz auf Unsere Beliebten Soccer-Spieler!

My latest post has been misplaced (not my fault as far as I can tell):
given time must read: 5:19 pm, not 5:19 am (otherwise it does not come clear that it is in reponse to izzy Dillon’s from 11:47 am)!

you did not hurt my feelings. Though wot I meant was that your mail seems that you underestimate the one who believes in Arg´s opportunity of having a win this friday.
I want Argentina to win this game as much as every single german wants its country to beat us however I do know that if we play as we did against Mx. will not have chance but if we play as we can play ( no necessarily as we did ag. Serbia )
the game will be more than open.
Germany vs Arg is a clasico.
My prediction is First mistake of the game: Go home…your home is closer than our though.
let´s hope we can offer the best game of the WC.

TO all German fans. Firstly, let me say this, your warmth, kindness, friendliness and generousity to all Australian soccer fans in germany over the past few weeks has been sensational.

Definately a time to make friends. I have been overwhelmed by your country’s support and warmth to our ’socceroos’.

I have been based in Munich during the cup and saw Australia play brazil at Allianz Arena.

Sitting in front of me during that match i saw what i thought were three Australians with three aussie flags.

When i said g’day they said hi, in a German accent. when i asked why they were in australian colours with our flag, the three boys simply said they hate brazil and love Australia.

That for me said it all. Germany you can be dam proud of the way you shown your country to the world.

May I take this chance to wish you the best against Argentina.

All of Australia is behind you.

You’ll never walk alone Germany.

All the best from Aussie fans.

Michael.

Rolf Habich: I think Germany has a great team and so does Argentina. My expectation is to see a very very good match. I am already nervous as I know it will be tough and I was close to the heart attack when we played against Mexico!

Having said this, I am a woman and I am from Argentina. So just you can have more than one opinion about us!

hey guys, i read the message from that Laura and i do want Argentina to win, but not to start underestimating our rilvals(Germany)
I believe that maybe she wasnt that right to start insulting you

And germans, i believe that you really feel superior, and you really don´t have something to believe that.
Well… see you on Friday, and lets hope we win

VAMOS ARGENTINA!

For all of you…learn some spanish it is really worthy…
This is how our team thinks about friday:

Tevez: A mí me gusta jugar con la gente en contra para que nos puteen un poquito. Y ahí es donde los grandes jugadores se muestran y donde se hacen los grandes jugadores. Ahí es cuando uno se agranda.

@ Michael from Oz - you was robbed mate, really! Was so feeling with the ‘roos when that dodgy pen went in.. especially since Craigie Moore was the only Newcastle player who scored in the World Cup and I would have loved to see mo(o)er from him LOL

as for the Friday match - we do not fear Argentina - we do look forward to playing them. Contrary to what manay people say, THEY are the favourites in the match and the pressure sure is on them. True enough we hadn’t faced any BIG teams until the Sweden game (no disrespect to ANY team we played ;-) but what Klinsi’s kids showed, especially in the first half, gave us reason to believe that we could beat any team on a good day (and some even on a bad one LOL)
I fully expect the quarter final in Berlin to be a great 90 minutes of football, attacking style but fair and the better team will win… and should we lose we’ll drown our sorrows on the night and go on being your friendly hosts.
Howay the German lads!!
