Klinsmann names his team

May 15th, 2006 | By: Harvey Morrell | 17 Comments »

Klinsmann recalls Nowotny for World Cup squad. Now let’s see if we can name our starting eleven. I’ll start with the obvious ones - Jens Lehmann in goal and Klose up front. Who do you think should be in the starting 11?

Complete roster:

Goalkeepers: Jens Lehmann (Arsenal), Oliver Kahn (Bayern Munich), Timo Hildebrand (VfB Stuttgart)

Defenders: Arne Friedrich (Hertha Berlin), Robert Huth (Chelsea), Marcell Jansen (Borussia Moenchengladbach), Philipp Lahm (Bayern Munich), Per Mertesacker (Hanover 96), Christoph Metzelder (Borussia Dortmund), Jens Nowotny (Bayer Leverkusen)

Midfielders: Michael Ballack (Bayern Munich), Tim Borowski (Werder Bremen), Torsten Frings (Werder Bremen), Sebastian Kehl (Borussia Dortmund), Bernd Schneider (Bayer Leverkusen), Bastian Schweinsteiger (Bayern Munich), Thomas Hitzlsperger (VfB Stuttgart), David Odonkor (Borussia Dortmund)

Forwards: Gerald Asamoah (Schalke 04), Miroslav Klose (Werder Bremen), Oliver Neuville (Borussia Moenchengladbach), Lukas Podolski (Cologne), Mike Hanke (Werder Bremen).

Update: See pictures of the players.

[...] Germany coach Jurgen Klinsmann tapped his 23 men and decided to include uncapped forward David Odonkor instead of the off form Kevin Kuranyi. He has also called upon veteran defender Jens Nowotny despite his two-year absence from international football. [...]

OMG GERMANY HAS ON OF THE WORST TEAMS — ONLY REASON THEY WILL DO GOOD IS COZ THEY WILL FIX THE MATCHES AND WIN — THATS THE ONLY WAY THEY CAN WIN, I MEAN EVERY WORLD CUP THEY WON WAS COZ THE REFS WERE CORUPT, SUCH AS IN 74 and 90!!!!!

Mahdi, Kuranyi’s an alternate. He could still make the team if someone, say like Oliver Neuville, gets injured.

Marco, no NEED TO SHOUT. Especially when you are dead wrong.

That is the poorest German squad I’ve ever seen. If it wasn’t for home advantage I’d be expecting you to go out in the group stage. A shame really as I grew up watching great German teams. Anyone know why the great players arn’t appearing anymore? Most other countries have lots of foreign players in their league’s yet still produce very good players, just look at England.

Mike, the 2002 team looked just as weak, if not weaker, on paper. And we know what happened last Cup. :) The worst thing that could happen would be for them to finish third. The last couple of teams to do so didn’t even qualify for the next Cup.

[...] The reaction to Jurgen Klinsmann’s Germany selection is interesting. Some are saying this is their weakest team ever. I’m not sure I agree with that, but it is a young team that on paper does not seem dominating. But games aren’t played on paper and the 50,000 plus fans backing the team each game won’t hurt. [...]
