Germany vs Ireland

In normal circumstances Loew would not hesitate to nominate his preferred strikers in tandem before addressing the other issues involved in selecting his team for Miroslav Klose and and Lukas Podolski showed in last year’s World Cup finals that they are compatible, inventive in their play and good finishers. – From fai.ie

Loew has put of deciding who will play alongside Kevin Kuranyi.  The decision comes down to Lukas Podolski, who hasn’t received much playing time for Bayern Munich as of late or Mario Gomez.  Podolski, not for lack of wanting to play, hasn’t played due to the amazing run that the duo of Miroslav Klose and Luca Toni have had at Bayern.  Klose is out hurt so the decision remains… who will be play alongside Kuranyi?  The good thing going for Podolski is that he scored the winning goal in Germany’s last match against Ireland.  But, he hasn’t received much playing time since recovering from injury.  Will Loew go with his favorite choice or will he put Gomez in?

Kicker seems to think it’s Prinz Poldi over Gomez. The photographers at the training sessions seem to think it’s Lukas, too, since there are a ton of him at viewimages.com. Before the start of the season I’d have picked Gomez, but he hasn’t looked as sharp for the VfB. And Poldi needs the match practice! ;)

The Kuranyi/Gomez pairing worked well in a friendly against Switzerland. I would go with those two. Germany only needs one point from this game to secure qualification. Podolski can get his match practise against the Czech Republic.
