Germany on to the Semi’s

June 30th, 2006 | By: Harvey Morrell | 164 Comments »

Took the day off so that I could watch the game. And what a game it was. I’m drained. Thank goodness for Klose. My favorite shot was near the end, just before the penalty kicks. Oliver Kahn was talking to Jens and giving him moral support. Great scene. I feel for the Argentina supporters. The game could have gone either way. Had it been played anywhere but Germany, I think I would be the sad one.

the austrians inferiority complex towards germany is legendary, far worse than the british, but thats not very surprising considering the fact that the last good thing coming from austria was mozart….and sachertorte. they’re like these neighbours, you may no this type, who are jealous because the guy next door is more handsome, has a bigger house, a nicer car, and prettier wife smarter kids who are able to articulate themselves correctly and are not retarded and its just makes them furious. poor austria, but if you try really, really hard and try out a liberal immigration-policy your country is maybe part of the WC in 2018.

“Justice” i think, you’re right with your statement!
Everyone, who say that Germany
is the right team in the semi-finals, know nothing about football.
The better team is flying home,
that’s the point.
Germany a.k.a THE LUCKYTEAM in the WorldCup-History.
Maybe they’ve paid Pekerman for his crazy changings.

Dear Terry,

read again (and perhaps once more) … and think … and think again … maybe you take a nap in between … maybe you ask your dad …

I am sure eventually it will dawn upon you.

If not, – never mind.

well, when I say Mozart was German I was refering to the German culture, Germany was not even a nation then. But anyway, why that matters?

Thanks Slartibartfast for your nice comments, I’m sure the majority of German people are great, and they don’t go with stereotypes when judging other nations, I was doing a generalization myself, I’m glad there are people like you that have respect and admiration for other nations and cultures. Like I said I admire myself German culture (and Austrian too that is basically same culture), I have many German friends and met wonderful German people. As soccer goes I think we are a stronger team but I think it will a be an interesting team so may the best team (hopefully not red cards, stupid penalty kicks or any garbage like that). I predict 2-1 for Italy. Ciao
I will sing Freude Schone Gotter Funken if we win (sorry for bad German spelling).

This may be a bit off topic, but reading these blogs, I just noticed how almost every post that comes from Austria (with an Austrian flag) has so much dislike and negativity towards Germany, I’m not from Europe nor Do I have a good idea on what goes around there, but what’s with this Austrians Dissing Germans? After all Aren’t you like a good negihbour of Germany sharing so many commonalites, and Considering no one has seen much of Austria’s football acheivements anywhere around in the past 20 years, who are you to talk so boldly?

Hi SumYung Gie,
this isn’t as big as it appears…
I even have some austrian friends ;-)

Some of them may have problems with germany cause they closely share the darkest part of our history with us.
Some others are just trolls like you find them all over the internet.

Greetings to canada

quality is one thing but looking at the history of football team spirit and will won the close matches and tournaments in the
end.
I believe cruijff is perhabs more a burden for present football in holland than helpfull.
Football is a team sport and nobody gets an award for having the best single performance while the team loses the match and my impression watchin Robben but also van persie was that they are wanting to win that single award. Another player like this is Rhonaldo from portugal i really do not like these players because they are wasting their talent by beeing unefficient for the team.

Not beliving in authorities i don“t know it is not a question of authority is a question of teamspirit and to understand foortball. Nobody is forced to play a team sport. they can play tennis or other sports.

To the unenlightened austrian here (small spelling of austrian in this case done by purpose): Learn some history, baby, and spare us your senseless rantings.

Now about the game:

What we have seen was a tactic ridden match, where Argentina looked better in the midfield, but thats all. (Un)fortunately, only goals count. And there Argentina had only one single real chnce in the whole 120 min. And thats from a corner, not by the actions of such an expencive team. The Argentine midfield and attack were totally neutralized during the whole game. And vice versa.

So, how can anyone say, Argentina deserved victory? Only because they looked nicer in midfield? Hello??? Someone at home?

They totally failed in the final test of mental strength, the penaly shot out. And thats why they have to go home. So easy, so simple.

About the ref: Even Argentinas don’t tell such a stupid nonsense. The ref made a good job in getting the first nervous fouls out of the game. So whats your problem? That he didn’t fell on the diver short before end? Perhaps without the Italian diver, which won Italy the place in the quaterfinals, it would have worked for Argentina, but certainly not afterwards. As Ronaldo had to find out in Brasils debacle.

So the final end was: Both teams were nearly the same on the field, but German players have better nerves in the end.

End of comment. Keep your rantings, intelligent comments are welcome.

Congratulations to the German victory. It reminded me of when I lived in Frankfurt during the 1974 world cup when the great German team underdogs to the Dutch team played their hearts out making their countrymen proud. Good Luck against Italy. Deutschland Uber Alles. (Soccer wise)

“Like I said I admire myself German culture (and Austrian too that is basically same culture)”

Now, that is just mean.

As we say in germay: austrians – the result of a failed experiment trying to turn bavarians into humans.

So you know how austria was founded? Before Hannibal crossed the Alps, he had to left behind all the wounded, crippled and retarded people.

Man, those Polish guys – their families must be proud.

“OK you Polacks, listen up. Form 2 lines. Over here: Genocide. Over there: Join Our Side.”

I can’t believe that the Germans aren’t ashamed that some of us sub-human Slavs are carrying the rest of the team.

There have to be some Germans who cannot dig the fact that their team has those two guys scoring all of the goals.

I really don’t know where I stand on this. It must be a national disgrace (in the view of many Germans) that there are Polish last names on German uniforms – that is the upside.

Even though they are making a mockery of German national pride (again – a good thing), the fact that they have set new standards for selling out – that I don’t like so much.

Now, this would be nice to see – the Polish guys score the only goals in the upcoming match and Germany goes to the final. (Nothing against Italy – this just has to happen to set up the situation).

Then, on the day of the final, none of the guys with Polish last names show up.

If my paying $ 2500 would make that happen, I would pay it in a second.

and America is discovered by an Italian ( Cristofero Colombo), named after another (Amerigo Vespucci), gets its atomic power status from an another Italian (Enrico Fermi). Stealing things ? Sure we got the best that we could get from other countries, but let’s see Constitution (Latin origin word), Senate, tomorrow is the fourth Independence (other Latin word) and so on.. United States law are drafted after roman law codes…hmmm
It sounds like the Mounty Phyton movie the Life of Brian, when the rebels are complaining about Romans and they say “What the Romans did for us after all?” ” Acqueducts” says somebody enthusiastically, “Well, beside acqueducts, what did the Romans did for us?, “Roads !!”, ” Ok, beside Acqueducts and Roads, what Romans did for us after all? “, “Laws and Order !!!”…and the list continues….

Hi Folks,

Germany vs Argentina was a tragedy to football as a game. it was one of the worst episodes of extremely poor referreing. Infact “The Man In Yellow” replaced Ballack & became the German Captain. Germany under no standards deserved a win against Argentina. germany will not cross Italy unless & until they again decide to play with 12 people…thats including the referee & also retaning him as their captain!!!

If football needs to live, these kind of refrerres needs to ne thrown out.

Lots of good luck to the german fans so that they possess a strong heart to see Germany losing this world cup.

From….A True fan & follower of Football with no bias to any sporting nation….

Congratulations Germany! This has truly been an exciting World Cup. (It is really hard to work when your mind is on soccer all day) :o ) Anyhow, I am German by birth…a girl…who grew up playing soccer in the United States. I am amazed and impressed by the German soccer players skills and their unity as a team. It is great to see, as I think truly soccer is a sport that has to have skill and communication. Great job to Jens Lehmann! I as a former goalie no the sacrifice a goalie has to make every minute in the game. This has been truly a Wunderbar World Cup. And I would be lying if I didn’t my heart and spirit will is cheering for mein heimat.
Alle zu liebe!

Great game, the playoffs this year are full of heartbrakers, myself as a fan of azzuri have suffered many , to many torturous and stereotypical comments on my team but more importantly italian culture, glad they won, either way i was kind of sad to see that people even try to entangle football, italy’s greatest feat, into some kind of mafia argument, people just don’t understand.

Dear friends,

have you seen the article appeared on “Der Spiegel” by the journalist Achilles? This white socks sandal naziskin journalist has reached the apex in stupidity creating a “state of the art” rubbish, racist, low profile article about the Italians taking as an excuse the football match. I feel sorry for the Germans to be represented by such an idiot who should be isolated. I love Germany and the Germans and I know that the majority of people are friendly and intelligent. Unfortunately sometimes ignorance, stupidity and common place prevails.
