1-0

June 14th, 2006 | By: Harvey Morrell | 33 Comments »

After an extra long flight, I caught the end of the first half at an airport lounge. At the half, I hurried to my hotel and turned on the TV. Much to my chagrin, and even though the hotel claimed to get ESPN, I couldn’t get the game on my room TV. Panic city. Rush to a nearby restaurant. Thankfully, the game was on at the bar although no one but me was watching. Two glasses of Paulaner Hefeweizen later, I was finally able to calm down and watch first Odonkor and then Neuville come on as second half subs. Amazed at Odonkor’s speed and crosses. Everyone at the bar turned to look at me when Neuville slotted home Odonkor’s cross. I guess they’d never heard anyone yell TOR! before.

I think it was a very good performance of the german team.

especially because the mannschaft showed the will to win this match until the last second and worked hard for it.

Harvey,

Great game, and congratulations. Team Germany has looked as slick as some of the crushing past versions of the squad. Klinsmann’s fingerprints are all over this team’s style of play.

Good show. Disappointing ending, though.

Yours,

Os.

I missed the opening game vs Costa Rica; so, I was expecting a great German team… yet, this was just a fair performance… that is until the last ten minutes when they took off. With one player more…

yes Frank: Germany always shows the will to win and works hard for it. This time they seem to have the talent, but not for 90 mins…

So, let me provoke you a bit: how will Germany will perform against a BALANCED team? With good defence, good midfield, and a couple of forwards that can score? Will have to wait for the second round…

Why isn’t Robert Huth playing? Is he injured?

Huth isn’t playing for having
no match practise. The two
lined defenders did a pretty
good job last night, didn’t
they?
So far I think it was the second
best game of the tournament, coming strait after Argentina
vs Cote de Ivory. What do you
think?

@Mike, well it was the second game for ger and pol in the group, these games are always going to be much more intens and risking than a first game.. but true, it wasnt awfull to watch (but nothing special)

still think the germans cant be tested in a group like they have, think its a laugh, the polish team played very fysical and thats a game you can trust the germans to play aswel (and better)

@Frank, true they showed their usall great mentality but doesnt it worry you that they needed to be till the 90th minute.. they should have finished the game much sooner

to all those german fans, still hope to meet you soon.. remember you havent beaten a ‘a- country’like Bra.,Arg.,Eng.,Fra.,Hol.,Spa., in years!!!

sweet dreams yall

Stef, to answer your question, how will Germany perform against a balanced team?
Answer: Hopefully better than England.

Polak,
so Klose lived in Poland for 8 years and in Germany since. What’s your problem. Check out his last name “Klose”. What’s not German about it? Though I think both Klose and Podolski were not at their very best. Scruples?

This was a great game and a typical Germany performance: they just keep playing and believing they can do it right up to the final whisle. How many crucial goals have they scored in the dying minutes over the years?
I’m feeling very pro-Germamny right now after spending a fab weekend in Hamburg last weekend. The fanfest was fantastic, and even though we couldn’t get tickets to the Argentina game we had a great time watching it in a biergarten next to the stadium. Everyone we met was brilliant. Thanks as well to host-a-fan.de and the Luethje family who looked after us. A gas.

Friedrich is got to go! Ich wuerde Schneider auf seiner Position spielen lassen und Borowski ins Mittelfeld stellen. Ausserdem sollte Odonkor mehr Spielzeit bekommen.

@goose

I was not very confident before th eWC started and i thought the german team would really have huge problems but the two matches showed more or less a good performance ( with several problems we can talk about) and compared to the other teams at the WC i believe germany has a chance to beat these teams.

If you watched th egerman match you saw a huge number of really good chances to score. So it was easily possible to beat poland 5:1. So nobody with a clear mind should be troubled about the time the goal was archived given the fact that germany dominated the match more or less from the start a match that poland really had to win.

Argentina was the only team in our part of the table that really showed a very good performance in the first match.

As i said before the spirit of the team is very good and the support of the people is unbelivable so i would not fear a match against england or the netherlands.

Sure we can loose and perhabs it is more likely if someone compares the players but one thing is more than sure there will be no easy victory against germany.
everybody will have to work very very hard for it and then this team will deserve the victory.

“So, let me provoke you a bit: how will Germany will perform against a BALANCED team? With good defence, good midfield, and a couple of forwards that can score?”

i watched a lot matches of the WC and only two teams qualify for your post in my oppinion. Argentina and the Czech republic. So i gues we will have to wait to the quaterfinal or the final to compare it but we will see the netherlands today and to play against serbia and their strong defense is always complicated so they have the chance to quality as the third team but even there we have to wait until the quaterfinal.

England and sweden really showed nothing somebody must fear in their marches. England is the biggest dissapointment so far in my oppinion because i really thought that they have a really great team this time but perhabs i am also a vicitm of the typical englsih hype before a cup.

To the Dutchie (goose)

as far as I know the Dutch haven’t made a very good game too, and look at another ‘a -country’ how u call it.. England!! they’re ridiculous. they call themselves favorites and how did they play??!! their first match was won through a goal from the captain of paraguay. in their second match the Trinis made the English look very stupid on the field.. the end score of 2:0 wasn’t earned at all! English sucked!
Germany will be a big surprise! u’ll see!hope to meet the dutch in 1/4 finals.. we will send u home… HARHARHAR

my dear neighbour friends

1. please keep it in english

2. @Mark, its true that England plays crappy(see my earlier posts) but still what a say is true, youre team hasnt won against a ‘big footballing country’ in years, these big countries may not all play that well till now but what i say still stands, you germans havent been tested yet and i still cant believe the luck on your draw..
but youre not as bad as i thought you would be i have to say..
still think we will beat this german team but we will have to wait and see

@Frank, still think that your team is too weak to beat a ‘real’ team (i know its a vague term), watched the England game on german tv (cant stand the dutch reporter) and was surprised.. the reporter talked England down from the first moments on, he said that this England team was nothing for the germans to get worried about, this i dont understand, in germany you either think youre team is the coming worldchampions or youre team crap (comments after the friendly games), even Netzer was very positive!! think you all get a bit overexited…

i too had great believe in this english team but they’re not out of it yet and im sure they’ll improve…

well my dear neighbours, dont get to over excited, well meet soon im sure, (and we’ll beat you!!)

whats the problem? everybody is talking about germany like they picked up a ball last week for the first time…quatsch
if you have eyes, the goals they scored were brilliant! thats what it takes to win at this level the skill, chance, and the balls to take those types of shots. ask koller or rosicy where they learned their craft! it wasnt hangin out with demarcus beasly or bruce arena! and by the way harvey next time your at the airport, just yell “homerun” theyll probably start singin “take me out to the ball game”…lol. und zu alle meine deutschen freunden und familie, tut mier sehr leit das ich nicht dabei sein kan. gottseidank fur web cams.

In the last world cup, Germany made it to the finals without playing a top ten team and beat the US only 1-0 (the US?) and then was handily beaten in the finals by Brazil.

In the 2006 world cup they once again have the easiest seed (hmm?)and have struggles against teams ranked aouside of the top 30.

Maybe in 2010 wil German soccer rebound?

Hi all,

I’ve been a supporter of Germany for over 20 years, and I’ve seen the highs and lows of this team. Before world cup I was worried, and I’m kinda still are. I was in the Arena on the opening match, and was thrilled, but I wasn’t too happy with the defense.

I’ve seen all your comments, and here’s my observations:

- The Poles played a game of “to be or not to be”, and teams like that are not easy to beat. Look at Paraguay, USA, T&T, Ivory coast.

- Germany defense is weak, I would say 5/10, on the left they are 9/10, but the right wing is weak.

- Klins should bring Frings back to the right defense were he was in 2002 and did well. Bring Kehl as stopper (when in defense mode) or Borowski (when in attack mode).

- Neiville can even be used to replace Schinder who gets tired early.

- Other teams might have more talent, but guys, if you put khan and Lehman aside, Germany has one of the youngest teams. This translates to Stamina, endurance, speed, energy, etc…

- I would only worry about them with teams that can slice defense such as Argentina, Brazil, Ghana, etc..

- The Dutch and English were dull so far, but when they play against Germany things are different.

- Huth is useless, hope he stays on the bench.

- Finally, this world cup is all about the first ten minutes. If you score, you really really put the other team off. Look at Argentina - S&M. S&M conceded one goal in the whole qualifications!!!!
Look at how Czech got shocked by Ghana. I would like to see how Germany would react after being a goal or two down. Also I wish they always focus 100% to score early.

regards

actually Cailfornia Germany Fan, you’re completely wrong you Nazi, Kraut! “Klose” is of Polish origin descent. I became totally interested in the whole bickering over who had the right to claim Miroslav Klose. He was born in Poland, appears to be at least 75% Polish and his full name is Polish. I looked up multiple books and it appears to be of Polish origin. The book Family Names: How Our Surnames Came to America by J.N. Hook Ph.D. says on page 216 in the Western Slavs: Poles, Czechs, and Slovaks chapter that Klose is of Polish origin. The very sentence says “Kmiec (Polish) was a farmer, Kmiecik a little farmer. Klos(e) specialized in growing grain.” Makes lot of sense to many because in Polish Klos means ‘ear or spike of cereal’. Therefore, an (e) added implies that of a person who specialized in growing grain. Also in a book by Elsdon C. Smith says the same thing: Klos, Klose: one who raised grain. On the other hand, there is some speculation that Klose may be a pet name derived from the personal name Nikolaus (German for Nicholas) which could be shortend to Klause which then can be simplified to Kloss and then finally to Klos which then can be used but by adding an (e) is a possibility. But of course due to rational and ockham’s razor it seems most likely that Miroslav Klose’s last name came from Poland. In addition, in Polish Klos is a short form of Miklos, variant of the personal name Mikolaj, the Polish form of Nicholas. In addtion, Kloss is the nickname from Sorbian klos ‘lanky child’ (literally ’stalk’). And if you know anything about the Sorbs you would know that they are a west Slavic minority living within Germany. They are akin to the Poles. This is yet another Polish possiblity to the origin of Klose but again although it’s less tedious than the German variant spelling from Nikolaus, the Klos(e) explanation of one who specialized in growing grain is again the best and logical explanation for Klose’s last name origin.
